Dosing 101

How to find your CBD dose.

No two people dose CBD the same way. Here's the conservative, start-low-go-slow ladder we walk every first-time customer through — plus the factors that shift your number and exactly when to adjust.

The dosing ladder

Four steps to a dose that actually works for you.

Patience beats guessing. This is the exact sequence our support team walks new customers through on the phone.

Start low

First-time customers begin at 10–15mg of full-spectrum tincture, taken once daily. It's a conservative dose designed to gauge your baseline response before going any higher — not a dose meant to feel dramatic on day one.

Hold for a full week

Take the same dose, at the same time each day, for seven full days before changing anything. CBD builds up gradually — judging it after one or two doses is the single most common reason people think 'it doesn't work.'

Nudge up by 5mg

If a week in you still aren't feeling the effect you want, increase by 5mg and hold for another week. Repeat this ladder slowly — most customers land somewhere between 25mg and 50mg per day.

Track how you feel

Keep a one-line note each day — sleep quality, pain level, mood — so you can see the trend instead of relying on memory. It also makes it easy to tell us exactly where you landed if you call in with questions.

What shifts your dose

  • Body weight — heavier bodies often need slightly more to reach the same effect
  • What you're using it for — sleep and pain tend to need higher doses than daily calm
  • Whether you take it with food — fat from a meal improves absorption of oil-based tinctures
  • Full-spectrum vs. isolate — full-spectrum's entourage effect can mean less product for the same result

Ground rules while you adjust

  • Don't double a missed dose the next day — just resume your normal amount
  • Don't judge a product after one use — give any new dose a full week
  • Don't combine multiple CBD formats without talking to us or your doctor first
  • Don't exceed 5mg increases per week — faster increases make it harder to isolate what's working

This guide is educational, not medical advice. If you take prescription medications — especially blood thinners — talk to your doctor before starting CBD. Questions? Call us at (303) 555-0166.

People who know exactly what’s in their bottle.

I switched from a big-box brand to Verde after I actually read the COA on my old bottle and realized it was eighteen months old. The batch on my Verde bottle is six weeks old. That alone changed how I think about CBD shopping.

Sleep · Daily tincture

The Mountain Relief Balm goes on every night before bed and again after long bike rides. The smell is herbal, not chemical, and the relief is real. My partner stole it within a week and we now subscribe to two tins.

Recovery · Topical balm

Our 14-year-old golden has bad hips and storm anxiety. The Calm Pet Tincture takes about 30 minutes and you can see him soften. We always have a spare bottle on the shelf — Verde's autoship makes that easy.

Dosing questions

Dosing questions, answered.

What's a safe starting dose of CBD?

10–15mg of full-spectrum tincture once daily is the conservative starting point we recommend to every first-time customer. It's low enough to establish your baseline response safely, and you can always go up from there — going too high too fast is the more common mistake.

How long before I feel CBD working?

Tinctures taken sublingually (under the tongue) are typically felt within 15–45 minutes for that single dose, but the cumulative effect that most people are actually looking for — better sleep, steadier mood, less pain — usually takes 5–7 consistent days to show up clearly.

Can I take too much CBD?

CBD has a wide margin of safety and no known lethal dose, but too much too fast commonly causes grogginess, dry mouth, or mild stomach upset. If you take prescription medications — especially blood thinners — talk to your doctor before starting, since CBD can affect how your liver processes certain drugs.

Does the dose differ by product type?

Yes. Tinctures act fastest and are easiest to fine-tune by the drop. Capsules and gummies are pre-measured but take longer to kick in (45–90 minutes) since they pass through digestion first. Topicals are dosed by area, not by mg absorbed into the bloodstream, so they follow a different logic entirely — apply liberally to the area of concern.

When should I adjust my dose?

Only after a full week at the same amount. If you're not feeling the effect you want after seven consistent days, increase by 5mg and hold again. If you feel too sedated or foggy, drop back down 5mg. Either way, one variable at a time — don't change dose and product type in the same week.

Is the dosing ladder different for pets?

Yes — pet dosing is by body weight, not a flat starting number. Our Calm Pet Tincture product page includes a weight-based chart; as a rule of thumb, start at roughly half the suggested dose for cats and senior dogs, and hold for the same full week before adjusting.
